Eve Fisher, Davidson, Vaughn went to glory on Wednesday, April 11, 2012; she had been just about everywhere else of interest. Born April Fool's Day, 1921, her career as one of the South's leading Socialites encompassed most of the twenti-.
eth century. Eve was the daughter of George Vaughn and his wife, Marganina, heiress to a Louisiana cotton fortune. Eve's parents, inveterate world travelers, entrusted her to the care of a bachelor uncle, Dr. Albert Vaughn, with whom she and her nurse lived in a suite of rooms at The Peabody Hotel. Eve attended Miss Hutchison's School and later St.
Mary's. At the age of 14, she was given her first car, a red 1935 convertible, in which she set out for the summer on a solo road trip, making unannounced visits to friends and relations along both sides of the river between Memphis and New Orleans: a trip she repeated annually during her high school years returning for the start of term each fall. Eve was possessed of many passions, among which clothes ranked first. In the 1940's, she accompanied her father on business trips to Hong Kong and ordered an elaborate wardrobe of mandarin costumes which she wore when entertaining at home. Eve also befriended Laclede Sturdivant, owner of the eponymous Memphis couture house; Eve would accompany Laclede on numerous buying trips snatching up the choicest designer gowns to assure that she would always be the most dazzling belle at any local ball.
Besides clothes, she collected antiques which along. with her lavish entertainments were often profiled in newspaper articles about her and her homes. She gained further notoriety for greeting guests to her door with a .357 Magnum in hand, accompanied by a shotgun wielding family retainer; this followed a 1964 break-in during which she and her husband were bound and robbed of a fortune in jewels, including a 6- carat diamond stripped from her finger. Her first husband, James P. Davidson, made a fortune after WWII in Army Surplus Stores, and served as first president of the Bank 'of DeSoto.
Once when he was out of town, Eve employed a teenager named Elvis Presley to work in the company's warehouse (not caring for the boy's looks, Jim fired him upon his return a few weeks later). During most of their marriage, Eve and her first husband resided at White Clover Hill, a home built on 15 acres in North Mississippi where the Peabody ducks once took their hiatus from the lobby fountain. They also kept an apartment in the penthouse of the William Len as an in town base. After being widowed, Eve met her second husband, Henry Fisher. Eve and Henry began their lives together in a home on Horseshoe Lake; retiring later to Village where Eve spent the remainder of her life.
Eve loved gardening and was especially proud of her orchids and azaleas. She was an avid golfer, and was passionate about swimming: something she imparted to scores of children whom she instructed in the sport. Eve committed many years toward working for Children's Diabetes. She leaves a family of dear friends in the Chatham Village Community; among them, Jane Munn, Jim and Ann Silano, Julie Alexander, Maya McNeal and her son, Shawn, and her little dog, Weenie. Calvert, (662)494-2833 Co-owner of Butcher Shop held BY SARA PATTERSON Germantown police arrested Butcher Shop house co-owner Scott Day Friday on domestic assault charges after what was believed to be a nightlong barricade situation at his home. A neighbor made a call to police about 11 p.m.
Thursday after a woman and child fled from a residence in the 8400 block of Creek Bridge Drive. The first officers on the scene attended to the woman, who suffered minor injuries and didn't require transport to the hospital, according to Scott Deputy Chief Day Rodney Bright. However, police were told that. the 42-year-old suspect was still in the house and possibly armed. A tactical team surrounded the property and tried to coax the suspect out of the house for hours, to no avail.
"Over time, we weren't getting any kind of response or result," Bright said. When the team finally stormed the house, no one was there. Day was found at about 4:45 a.m. at his parents' home close by in the 8300 block of Green Downs Cove. Day's father, Dennis, is a founder of the Butcher Shop Steakhouse restaurants, where customers can cook their own cuts of meat.
Scott Day was taken into custody without incident and charged with domestic assault. Sara Patterson: (901) 529-2542 Hayes fire reports withheld BY CLAY BAILEY The Shelby County Fire Department declined Friday to release reports of previous fires involving the occupants of a house once owned by Isaac Hayes, saying the cases are now part of the ongoing investigation into the latest blaze. Department spokesman Brent Perkins, who had planned to release the reports Friday, said the investigation into Wednesday night's fire at 9280 Riveredge in south Cordova is continuing. Perkins said there was no preliminary information on the cause of the Wednesday evening fire or where it started in the house. Asked how he would characterize the investigation expanding to previous fires, Perkins said: "I would consider this standard operating procedure." The house, built in 1996, was purchased by Kenneth and Doris Peters the current occupants in June 2011.
A fence was stretched across the yard in front of the house earlier Friday and insurance adjusters had started working at the site in conjunction with county fire investigators. Part of the fire officials' work now includes reviewing previous fire calls at the 9280 Riveredge address and 368 Riveredge West, where the Peters family lived before moving into Hayes' former house. Perkins confirmed that before Wednesday night's fire, the department answered a pair of calls to the 9280 Riveredge address last November. On March 20, 2011, firefighters responded to a fire at 368 Riveredge West, which is several blocks west of the current Peters residence. The assessor's office shows that was the Peters' previous residence.
It is now a vacant lot. Perkins could not provide any other details about those calls since they are part of the current investigation. Clay Bailey: (901) 529-2393.
