Mr. Gossett, known to friends simply as Bill, recently celebrated 30 years at Christian Brothers, where he taught world history, current events, world geography and theater. Outside the classroom, he taught Sunday school at Christ United Methodist Church for 20 years. "He always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye," said Beth Moore, a member of his Crossroads Sunday school class. "He was like a friend to everybody," said class member Donna Glenn.
For the past 30 years, Mr. Gossett had been affiliated with the Memphis Park Commission, where he served as the city's first mobile unit driver, Glenn said. To reach reporter Jacinthia Jones, call 529-2780 or E-mail Mrs. Walker advocated for kids in court By Kimberly Edwards The Commercial Appeal Mary E. Walker was a champion of children's rights and gave her all when it came to defending children in the criminal court system. Mrs.
Walker, a public defender for Shelby County Juvenile Court, died of cancer Friday at Methodist Hospital. She was 57. "She made sure that kids who couldn't afford an attorney got a square break," said Dr. William Walker, her husband. "She was very involved in making sure that children's rights were guarded." Mrs.
Walker became juvenile defender coordinator for Memphis and Shelby County Juvenile Court in 1981. Attorney Zeke Graves, who worked with Mrs. Walker for nine years, said she had a heart of gold and a humble personality. "This could be a very demanding and depressing job working with these kids, and she handled it well," he said. "A lot of the defendant families didn't realize what good she did for them by looking into their affairs and charges she was the type that always went the extra mile." Graves said he and Mrs.
Walker had an unusual relationship. They were adversaries in the court system until five years ago, when he became a juvenile defender on her staff. "We became the best of friends outside of the court," he said. "To me, her job was more like social work because she had a real kind way of talking to families in juvenile court." Mrs. Walker was a graduate of the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, where she was a member of the Phi Alpha Delta legal fraternity.
She received her law degree from the University of Memphis School of Law in 1978 and began her career at Horne and Peppel, P.C. in Memphis. She was a member of the Memphis Bar Association, Association of Women Attorneys, University of Memphis Law School Alumni Board, Tennessee Juvenile Courts Services Association, president of the Avon School Parent Teacher Association. Mrs. Walker was also a founding member of the Central Gardens Association and served as president in 1994-1995.
Mrs. Walker also leaves two daughters, Heather Williamson of Bartlett and Jennifer Walker-Journey of Birmingham; her parents, Loyal and Francis Stinebaugh of La Quinta, and two grandchildren. The family requests that any memorials be sent to the Katherine Hookan Scholarship Fund at the University of Memphis School of Law. To reach reporter Kimberly Edwards, call 529-2322; E-mail 14-year-old air crash victim is buried By Robert Sanchez The Associated Press ARKADELPHIA, Ark. The youngest victim of the crash of American Airlines Flight 1420 was buried Saturday, remembered as a "story of courage, patience, strength and love." Rachel Fuller, 14, died Wednesday of burns suffered in the June 1 crash at Little Rock National Airport.
"The thing I learned from her is whatever you do, work with all your heart," said Greg Jones, Rachel's band director at Goza Junior High. "She was a person we all hope our children would grow up to be and who we'd like to be too." After that remark, there was an audible sigh from many among almost 1,000 people who packed the performing arts center on the Ouachita Baptist University campus. Mourners began arriving 90 minutes before the service and formed a line. Inside, they spoke quietly as they passed a 15-foot table, leafing through photo albums and reviewing scholastic awards. Her eighthgrade report card, with all A's, was framed.
On a table, near four athletic trophies and her softball jersey, was a softball, with encouraging messages from her teammates; they sent it to her as she lay in a Little Rock hospital. In the corners of the entryway were flowers sent from one of the bands in which Rachel played the oboe, and two arrangements from American Airlines. Rachel suffered serious burns over more than half her body. She received skin grafts before dying at Arkansas Children's Hospital. Flight 1420 arrived at Little Rock during a thunderstorm.
Data from in-flight recorders show that equipment designed to slow the plane didn't deploy fully and the jet sped off the runway at about 90 mph. The plane slid into a bank of elevated runway lights, then careened down a rock levee and crashed into steel stanchions supporting an airport guidance system. The plane broke in half and developed other cracks through which many passengers escaped as a fire swept the plane. Rachel was the 11th person to die from the crash of the McDonnell-Douglass MD82 jet. Nine, including the pilot, died the night of the crash; a 10th person died last week.
The girl's mother, Cindy Fuller, her left leg propped up from an injury received in the crash, was wheeled into the auditorium by her husband, Charles. As an oboe player, Rachel was so special that Jones, made room for her in all-brass band. The band was onstage; her seat was empty. "Rachel deserves so much more than this," Jones said. His words trailed off and he paused to wipe his eyes.
At the same time, OBU president Andrew Westmoreland looked down and wiped away tears. Near the end of the 80-minute service, Greg Kirksey, president of the state Baptist Convention, read from a poem that Rachel wrote in the sixth grade: "I know where I'm going when my life is through. "To a place of no worries, a place of no fear, a place of joy, a place of cheer. "Of love everlasting, of peace throughout, of all these things, and never doubt." Rachel was on the plane with the Ouachita Baptist University choir, which was returning from a trip to Germany and RESTAURANT INSPECTION SCORES Each week, the Memphis County Health Department inspects 80 to 90 full-service restaurants, food pantries, bars, lounges, concession stands and other food service businesses.
